Howard Moss, M.D.

Howard B. Moss, M.D. is currently Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the University of California at Riverside School of Medicine, as week as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at University of California San Diego. He is the former Associate Director for Clinical and Translational Research at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Moss is a board-certified addiction and general psychiatrist. For the past 30 years, Dr. Moss has been a key opinion leader in addiction psychiatry and in the evidence-based clinical management of individuals with substance use disorders complicated by psychiatric comorbidity, Previously, he has been Professor of Psychiatry at University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and the University of Pittsburgh prior to assuming his role at the National Institute of Health. His research has focused on the clinical manifestations of substance use disorders, their etiology, and the intergenerational transmission of risk and resilience. This work has employed diverse methodologies that include psychiatric epidemiology, advanced statistical methods, neurochemistry/neuropharmacology, psychophysiology, biomarker development, neuroimaging, and molecular and behavioral genetics. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed scientific journal publications and three books. He has also mentored numerous medical students, residents, fellows, and academic faculty in the conceptualization, development and conduct of addiction-related research protocols, as well providing didactic lectures to trainees at various stages of their academic training. Dr. Moss now resides in La Jolla, California.
